The Table is Set

When one of those who reclined at table with him heard these things, he said to him, “Blessed is everyone who will eat bread in the kingdom of God!”    Luke 14:15 ESV

I started with there’s no fear at the table. Then I wanted to look at what's on the table but really got distracted by what the table was. This time I’m exploring what is set on our table.

The first thing God brought to my mind is the fruit of the spirit.

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.   Galatians 5:22-23 ESV

All this fruit is set before us. It’s ours.

He has been challenging me not to ask for peace or self-control. He has already set them before me on the table and within me by His Spirit. I need to cultivate them and let them out. He can’t give me more but He can teach me to better walk in what He has already given.

What else is on the table?

Bread

Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.   John 6:35 ESV

 Wine

And likewise the cup after they had eaten, saying, “This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood.   Luke 22:20 ESV

Living Water

Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.”   John 4:10 ESV

 The cup of His suffering

I feel there is more to say here but I’m not sure what yet. We don’t like to hear about suffering, yet it’s part of the deal. Jesus didn’t shirk it, why should we? Jesus and Paul both remind us it pales to the glory that is ours.

that I may know him and the power of his resurrection and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death,   Philippians 3:10 ESV

But rejoice insofar as you share Christ's sufferings, that you may also rejoice and be glad when his glory is revealed.     1 Peter 4:13 ESV

Communion

Jesus said, “Do this in remembrance to Me” the Covenant made in His blood is at the table. We come to the table and remember His suffering and what it bought for us.

When I feel surrounded by darkness I turn and look at the darkness and be afraid. Or I can look across the table at the Father, at Jesus. I can look into the light. It doesn’t matter what is out there if I come to the table. I stay at the table and focus on what's on the table. When I focus on Him it changes my perspective of everything.

How do you stay focused on Jesus?
